Capstone Technical Support C60 Fan Failures

Systems Affected

Model C60 MicroTurbine systems containing ECM/LCM or BCM assemblies with 511540-200 fan inverters and 510537-200 and –300 fan assemblies with date codes 33/01 and 34/01. BCM and ECM/LCM fan assemblies that incorporate sine wave filters (512580-001) are exempt from this Bulletin. Model C60 MicroTurbines that may be affected are S/N’s: 1604, 1904, 1927, 2047, 2048, 2219, 2260, 2266 and 2287 through 2797 (Nov ’01 – May ’03).

Description of Problem

BCM and ECM/LCM fan and inverter failures have been observed recently in some Model C60 systems. The failures have been linked to two vendor shipments of fans manufactured using inferior fan winding insulation. Failures in the field have also been caused by faulty or partially damaged fan inverters, which control fan operation.

BCM assemblies utilize a single fan inverter (511540-200) to power the BCM fan (510537-300). ECM and LCM assemblies utilize a single fan inverter (511540-200), located in the ECM assembly, to power both the ECM and LCM fans (510537-300).

Capstone is presently screening the fans through a burn-in process in the short-term while a long-term solution is put into place.

Recommended Action

If a fan has stopped operating (non-spinning), operators should remove the side panels and visually inspect the BCM and ECM/LCM assemblies for fan inverter damage (cracking, burns). A fan failure warning code (9015 GDSP FAN FAIL) is one indication of a possible fan and/or fan inverter failure.

Perform fan and fan inverter troubleshooting procedures per the Model C60 Troubleshooting Guide (430012). If a failure is identified, replacement of both the fan(s) and inverter is required.

For BCM assemblies with fan failures, replace the fan and inverter assembly.

For ECM and/or LCM assemblies with fan failures, replace both ECM and LCM fans and the inverter assembly.

CAUTION

When inserting the new fan inverter on ECM/LCM/BCM boards, be careful not to bump the damper resistors on the edge of the inverter board. A cracked or damaged damper resistor during installation can cause a possible inverter failure, leading to more fan failures.
